ICANN to allow companies choose their own top-level domain names
01 July, 2008
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a not-for-profit organization that oversees the naming scheme for websites, has decided to allow companies to purchase new top-level domain names ending in whatever they like.
Under the new rule, companies may add their company name to the end of their URL instead of being limited to .com, .org or .co.in as the last letters of their web addresses. The new naming process will begin in 2009 and may cost anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 or more.
ICANN has also approved a proposal towards introducing domain names written in scripts such as Asian and Arabic. Paul Twomey, chief executive officer, ICANN, hopes “the new naming conventions would create new ‘real estate’ on the internet.” [Source: CNet]

Woahh.. $50,000 to $100,000...
Thats sounds too unrealistic for me.. I have always suggested people to buy a .com domain if its avaiable, or any other TLD if not a .com
The idea is, if you invest some good money on SEO, and some SEM activities.. the TLD doesn't really matter for your business.
This will be a cool bet, lets book things like .ibm .oracle. Lets watch out guys... and make some money :)
Any one think that a person or company will investement of $50000+ for not making profit?????????
$50,000 to $100,000 -Thats some money?
How many of such will be bought at this rate?
I wonder what impact this would have on SEO.
Would this mean that a company would then be able to create as many urls as they want using that TLD, or would they have to pay $50,000 to $100,000 for each URL that is created?
Well! I think its a great move.Domain Price need to be normal one (what we pay for .com domains).
If only the cash weren't a problem I am sure of the most contested names and domains that would be wanted.
How exactly are they not for profit? They sell at such high costs and use it for their own maintenance? Or give to charity?
