PancreaticCancerIndia.com launched to build awareness on pancreatic cancer

A group of oncology experts in India have launched PancreaticCancerIndia.com, an online platform for building awareness on pancreatic cancer and periampullary tumors in patients and care givers as well as healthcare professionals.

Pancreatic cancer is a silent killer seldom detected in the first stage. The pancreas lies behind the lower part of the stomach. The symptoms — stomach pain, loss of appetite, jaundice — may not even manifest themselves till the disease has advanced. But once it happens, it's almost fatal. In US, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.

Unlike certain cancers such as lung or breast, researchers have still not been able to pinpoint the exact reason for pancreatic cancer. “We can only guess that diet, smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity could be the reasons behind the disease,” Dr Shyam Aggarwal, senior consultant, oncology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, has said. Pancreatic cancer is hard to catch early. It doesn't cause symptoms right away. When you do get symptoms, they are often vague or you may not notice them. Because it is often found late and it spreads quickly, pancreatic cancer can be hard to treat.

That's a nice initiative. I would also like to point out that there are other types of cancers which are a diagnostic challenge. Sarcoma is a cancer type which is very rare and is usually mis-diagnosed a lot of times and sometime its too late when its diagnosed. I would urge Indian Oncologists to come forward and start some focused initiative/website dedicated to Sarcoma.
